Shekhar Kumar was arrested on Thursday – for hitting a dog with his car. The injured dog, it turned out, was a senior bureaucrat’s pet. Kumar, 28, a tea stall owner, was driving a Maruti Zen when he hit the dog near Lodhi Garden, a south Delhi’s park frequented by the city’s who’s
who.

He was allegedly drunk.

“The incident took place when the caretaker was crossing the road along with the dog. The car was speeding and it hit the dog. The driver lost balance and hit the pavement,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.

On hearing the dog’s yelp, local residents gathered and Kumar reportedly misbehaved with them, after which he was handed to the police.

Two others, who were in the car with Kumar, managed to escape, police said.

“The accused was in a drunken state,” said the officer.

During investigation, police found out that dog belonged to a bureaucrat. The dog was then rushed to a private hospital for medical attention.

Kumar was taken into custody and taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for medical examination.

Tests confirmed he was driving under influence, police said.

A case of rash and negligent driving was registered and Kumar arrested.

Police have impounded the offending car.
