A few countries such as USA, Germany, Japan, UK, have already taken the lead and made huge investments in thrust areas of nanotechnology. The global funding for nanoscience and technology has now gone up to approximately $3 billion in 2003.

Since the announcement of the US National Nanotechnology Initiative in January 2000, the Science and Technology Policies of Asia Pacific countries have undergone significant changes.

Nanotechnology is now one of the high-priority areas for Asia Pacific governments as well. Budgets for the new technology research and development have been raised largely and more strategically allocated. Total expenditure for Asia Pacific countries has exceeded $1 billion for the past 2 years and will continue to increase.

Japan has been investing in nanoscience since the 1980s and after the USA is the heaviest nanotechnology R&D investor worldwide, and along with China, South Korea and Taiwan has increased its budget substantially since 2001.

Australia is currently evolving a national strategy, but already has considerable infrastructure and funding in place. India, Thailand and Vietnam have also identified nanotechnology as a significant area and are moving towards implementing the proper framework.
