This will be a summer of laughing yellows, delicious greens and glistening browns.

Every year, the finale of the Lakme India Fashion Week, which ended late on Tuesday, sets the colour tone for the summer as India's biggest beauty major creates the mood and palette for the season.

This year the mood selected by Lakme was peppermint - depicted by designers Varun Bahl and Monisha Jaising.

Jaising worked on pepper and Bahl on mint and the colours they chose were light green, fresh yellow and rich brown.

The swishing sounds of the jungle, the tittering of birds, electronic images of dense foliage - projected onto the white backdrop of the runway - preceded Bahl's collection, which was effervescent and delicate at The Grand hotel here.

There were dainty jackets in yellow, green printed wraparounds and sarongs and neckpieces that had cloth tied in wire with peppermint pill-shaped steel rings.

With everyone from designer Ritu Beri to tennis star Mahesh Bhupati on the front rows, Bahl's collection serene collection was a sight for sore eyes after the mania and madness of the fashion week.

"Did you feel cool when you saw the collection?" asked Bahl after the show. "If you did, I have succeeded."

Jaising showed some sprightly printed shirts in silk, teamed with fitted, printed pants that defined a sense of summery elegance as perfect for a drink at the lounge as for dinner at a hip, new restaurant.

"We wanted to graphically depict the sense of spice through our prints," said Jaising.
