The Aminabad police, on Tuesday, arrested two-wheeler mechanic and claimed that he had mistaken the trader as one from a rival group and shot him. The accused Uzair Ahmed alias Ujju of Chikmandi locality too confessed to having shot at Suresh Gautam of Pandeyganj.
Qaiserbagh Circle Officer Ajay Mishra said It was around 7.30 pm on March 7 when rumours about a clash had caused panic among local residents leading to chaos in Chikmandi locality. Gautam was shot at in the melee. He, too, was on his way home after putting up the shutters at his shop following news of the chaos. Gautam succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. A major blast had taken place in Varanasi the same evening and had sparked panic in these areas. Riots had taken place in these areas on March 3.
Mishra claimed that they were groping in the dark when someone from the locality contacted the police and intimated them that it was Uzair of the same locality who had shot at Gautam. The informer had also said that the Uzair had not come home since the incident.
A police team was engaged in the job to probe the case and clues leading to Uzair’s involvement in the murder. The cops came to know that he was staying at one of his relative’s place in Kakori since March 8. The cops picked up Uzair for interrogation and he reportedly confessed to the crime.
Uzair said he had come out of his house that evening to see people running for cover on the street. He thought they had been attacked and out of fear took out his.12 bore country-made pistol and fired. A stray bullet had hit Gautam, Uzair said.
