Katie Holmes has ransacked hubby Tom Cruise’s wardrobe and Victoria Beckham too has borrowed David Beckham’s jeans. Closer home, you might soon see Bipasha Basu in John Abraham’s jeans and Kareena Kapoor in Saif’s denims. This trend — ‘Boyfriend jeans’ — has become quite a rage in west and is fast catching up here, with Delhi’s hi-street brand outlets stocking the style.

Mango, which has been stocking boyfriend jeans for women for the last two seasons declares it a big hit with the young girls who are up-to-date with international trends. Shashank Jani, GM Operations, Major Brands, says, "The sale of these jeans have increased from the last season as the trend is slowly becoming popular. We display four to five different styles of this cut."

However, some feel Delhi girls are not yet catching on to the trend. Manjula Tiwari, COO, Esprit says, "The style is not popular in India yet, as skinny and straight fits continue to be in vogue.” Pragiti Chauhan, an LSR college student, however, says, “I have seen many in college sporting this new loose slouchy denims or boyfriend jeans.”

Those stores that haven’t stocked typical ‘boyfriend jeans’ are also busy adapting the trend. Anshul Chaturvedi of Wrangler says, “We don’t have a ‘Boyfriend jeans’ fit in our collection this season. However, our fashion forward women consumers who are looking for a boyfriend jeans silhouette do pick up the Wrangler men’s fit called ‘Floyd’.” Anaita Shroff Adajania, fashion director of Vogue India and stylist for many mainstream Bollywood movies, says, “Probably next year in summer we may see many Bollywood stars sporting this new trend of ‘boyfriend jeans’. The key to wear this look is not to wear actually your boyfriend’s jeans but get the ones that are available in the stores for girls, which fits well and don’t look slouchy.”

Tips to wear them right
The term refers to a style of denims which is tight around the rear but relaxed in the legs.
Choose the widest belt you can that will still fit through your pant loops.
Ballet flats, Converse-style shoes or strappy sandals can work with boyfriend jeans
Keep the style simple with a fitted tee, a button-down shirt, a cardigan, or a small-knit sweater.
Remember that unlike the name it doesn’t mean you actually wear your Boyfriend’s jeans. It’s a cut specially designed for girls.
