  Dear surfer,
This is a sequel to last year's public probe that HindustanTimes.com launched to unravel the mystery of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's disappearance in 1945.
Though the 2001 probe concluded beyond reasonable doubt that the leader had not died in the plane crash, no answer could be found to surfers' question on his fate beyond August 18, 1945. more...

Bhagwanji, Netaji birthday on January 23

By Anuj Dhar

Bhagwanji's birthday: Written in his own hand .

Letters and photographs found among Bhagwanji's belongings indicate that his birthday was celebrated on January 23, the same day that Netaji was born.

A revolutionary freedom fighter Charan's (pseudonym) letter in Bangla - marked 2523 in the inventory list - says: "I wait for this day the whole year. My holy mahamanav (great man), I bow at your lotus feet."

Another revolutionary Kamalakant Ghosh of Rulempur Road, Kolkata, wrote on January 23, 1967: "On your 70th birthday…, I cannot express my feelings for you. I am speechless. With one bow I send my countless regards."

A 10-page letter from one Prasad (antecedence unknown) - marked 1740 in the inventory - wrote to Bhagwanji the day he was 81, saying, "You are still not 90...", going on to compare Bhagwanji to Bhisham Pitamah, a father figure in the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

On January 23, 1984, a person who did not want to be named, quoted Gurudev Ravindra Nath in his wishes to Bhagwanji, calling him "the greatest son of mother India".

Charan wrote again on January 21, 1981: "Please accept my pranams (greetings) on your auspicious birthday. I am waiting for you to come out in person. …I get anxious and at times I get desperate. Sri Sri Sita Ram Onkar Nath Thakur (a holy man) has told me that 'many people say that I am in touch with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose'".

Bhagwanji's helper Rajkumar also told Mukherjee Commission recently that on January 23 every year people from Kolkata, including Indian National Army's secret service chief Dr Pabitra Mohan Roy, would visit Bhagwanji to celebrate his birthday. It was a custom which began in 1964 after Netaji's friend Leela Roy had met and identified Bhagwanji.
