A page from a letter to Mejabowdidi Bivabati (1925)

Historical Context: Subhas wrote this letter to Bivabati Bose, widow of his elder brother Sarat Bose, on 11 September 1925 from Mandalay prison in Burma (now Myanmar). Subhas then 27, was sent to Mandalay in 1924 when he was the Chief Executive Officer of the Calcutta Corporation. (The Calcutta Corporation's revenue at that time was more than the revenue of Assam). His imprisonment under Regulation III of an old Act of 1818 by the British government astonished him and to a large extent convinced him that the British would give him no respite.

The letter was written after the sudden death of his political guru Deshbandhu C R Das. C R Das' death had distressed Bose immensely.
