Dear Editor,

"I do not believe that Netaji died in the air-crash on August 18, 1945. In fact, I do not think the crash happened at all.

Is it at all possible that a plane which has nose-dived, in which the petrol tank has burst, one of the engines has been blown off and breaks into two when it crashes will have any survivors? Yet there are some Japanese and Netaji's aide Col Habibur Rahman who have survived.

There are many contradictions in the evidence presented before the two commissions, the Shah Nawaz Khan Committee and the Khosla Commission.

First, the conflicting signals from the Japanese Intelligence Organisation, Hikari Kikan.

The signal is marked August 18. But the message says, "Today at 1700 (17 Aug)
'T' with Lt. Gen. Shidei and others, left here for Tokyo via Formosa and Dairen.

Another signal on Aug 20th says: 'T' while on the way to the capital, as a result of an accident to this aircraft at Taihoku at 1400 hrs on August 18 was seriously injured and died at midnight on the same date. His body has been flown to Tokyo by the Formosan army.

The signal was given "urgent" priority but was not sent on August 17. The originating date is shown as August 18. The signal in fact originated on August 18. If Netaji left for Tokyo at 1700 hours on the August18, then how did he die in the air-crash at 1400 hrs on August 18? It is impossible!

Who made the announcement of his death? Not the government. Not the Japanese army. But a private news agency, the Domei News Agency. The news announcement for Domei was drafted by the publicity and propaganda minister of the Azad Hind Fauj, S A Ayer. He received the information from Rear Admiral Chuda and Colonel Tada who had never been to the crash site.

Furthermore, the news announcement says that Subhas Bose died in an army hospital in Japan whereas the Hikari Kikan signal says that Subhas Bose died on the same day at midnight in Taihoku. His body was flown to Tokyo by the Formosan army. How can his death occur at two places?

S A Ayer drafted the announcement without visiting the crash site at Taihoku or meeting Habib before preparing the draft.

None of the above were witnesses to the air-crash. The air-crash did not happen.

Also, there is no death certificate of Subhas Bose's death.
