The
year of the underdog
It was a remarkable year indeed. Apart from the fact that
the last 12 months were unusually propitious for Bollywood,
the year stood out for the many major surprises that it threw
up. Several unfancied releases outstripped big banner potboilers
in terms of box office collections. Those that didnt
garnered enough critical hosannas to make a difference to
the overall qualitative health of Mumbai movies.

Bollywoods
B all and end all
The Bachchans Amitabh and Abhishek ruled the
Bollywood roost in 2005 like no other father-son pair has
ever done in the annals of popular Hindi cinema. Bollywood
just couldnt do without them because there were fewer
box office bets in the industry safer than the two Bachchans.

Ash
& Sush: Global hot shots?
The year 2005 saw numerous Indian actresses sashaying into
the global scene with intent. But the jury is still out because,
with the exception of The Myth, which indeed lived
up to its name, none of the films in questions have been tested
yet at the turnstiles.

Ups
and downs of The Rising
One of the biggest tinsel town stories of the year 2005
the much-hyped release of Ketan Mehtas long-awaited
magnum opus, Mangal Pandey - The Rising was
anything but an unqualified success story. But the sort of
play that the film got in the media during the process
of its casting, its initial planning, its actual making and,
finally, its arrival at the theatres far outstripped
the attention that was attracted by supposedly more successful
releases.

Bollywood
2005: Lost opportunities
Missed opportunities, dashed hopes, deteriorating tastes,
and unfulfilled promises: Bollywood had its share of big-time
disappointments during 2005. For one, Bollywoods attempted
forays into the world market did not quite set the Hudson
or the Thames on fire. The other big disappointment
was that Bollywoods copycats refused to mend their ways,
lifting Hollywood plots left, right and centre.
