"I am not a fan of Mr Pawar but as an expat Indian I do feel
very offended when cricketers can insult a statesman." The letter
(to HindustanTimes.com) by an overseas Indian, reacting to the 'Pawar-push',
would best sum up the mindless and unnecessary Champions trophy episode
featuring Aussie arrogance at it best (or worst?).
The 'racist' and crude mindset of the Australian cricket team,
euphoric (or mad?) over their first victory in the biennial event,
had never been on display on such a bigger scale. Though Sunny Gavaskar
sent a very subtle and strong message -- Can they insult their Prime
Minister John Howard in the similar fashion? We Indiands respect
our seniors -- prompting Ricky Ponting to tender apology, the damage
was done.
The event hit international headlines triggering condemnation far
and wide. While Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar tried to
downplay 'the-push-or-nudge-event', and angry nation did
not miss the point: In showing disrespect to our senior citizen-politician,
they have shown their utter disregard to the Union Council of Ministers,
representing India. For a nation that feeds on cricket (and politics),
the event had all the ingredients of a (politicial) potboiler sending
Indians into a seething rage.
