India sends two films to the Oscars

After much deliberation, the Film Federation of India decided to push Rang De Basanti as India's official entry to the Academy Awards which would be held early next year in the USA. The film has been nominated in two categories which include Best Original Song (Khalbali and Looka-Chhupi) and Best Foreign Film.

Considering that Bollywood's fare this year has been nothing short of extra-ordinary (Krrish, Fanaa, Omkara), the choice of Rang De Basanti - a film which aimed to instil nationalistic values, that date from the days of India's struggle for independence, into gen X and Y- was welcomed and much lauded.

Rang De Basanti's greatest rival was the thinking man's comedy Lage Raho Munnabhai. Its producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra was, however, dissatisfied with the FFI's decision and has therefore submitted Lage Raho as a private entry.

Indian-born Canadian Deepa Mehta's Water - based on the plight of widows in India - has also been submitted to the Oscars, in the Best Foreign Film category.
