The Volcker Committee -- set up by the United Nations to inquire
into the Oil For Food Programme -- named K Natwar Singh, who was
a minister in the Manmohan Singh Cabinet as a 'non-contractual beneficiary'
of
the scandal.
The authority found that Natwar and his son Jagat had misused their
position in helping friends bag three oil contracts from the UN
sanctioned Saddam regime.
Natwar Singh, who was summoned by the Authority, always maintained
that he had not done anything wrong and that the inquiry would prove
his innocence.
He also accused the Enforcement Directorate of indulging in a witch-hunt
and harassing his son and others.
He then hinted at some higher-ups in the Congress party of going
after him and even complained to the Prime Minister.
