India was was the "Guest of Honour" at the Frankfurt Book Fair which was held in October 2006. The theme of the event, "Today's India" had the aim to throw the limelight onto contemporary India and its vast number of cultures.

The focus was not on authors writing in English - though they were represented by Vikram Seth, Arundhati Roy and Amitav Ghosh - but on those authors who wrote in other Indian languages. They included Vijay Tendulkar (Marathi), Sunil Gangopadhyaya (Bengali), Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh (Gujarati), just to name a few.
