Officials of the Maharashtra Government held bhajan-kirtan programmes
in Yavatmal. This is one part of their "atma vishwas jagruti
abhiyan" campaign, an awareness and confidence building programme
in the district. The aim is to boost the morale of a farming community,
now rocked by large numbers of suicides.
Every eight hours a farmer kills himself in Vidarbha alone, so
that his debt may also be cremated along with his body. Inspite
of our GDP and Sensex growing at a break-neck speed, there are millions
of Indians who don't even have basic sustenance.
It's a shame for a country which claims itself to be a predominantly
agrarian society. It's a shame on those people who claim themselves
to be the guardians of this country.
Year after year, the number of suicide cases in Vidarbha is mounting.
Even after various grants given by the Centre and the state to these
farmers, why aren't the suicide cases subsiding? Someone please
tell these politicians that arranging kirtans and changing names
won't help solve this crisis. India can not shine unless the fruits
of development reach the grassroots, specially the farmers.
