In an era of IT and the information highway, virtual has become real and information dissemination takes place more rapidly than the speed of light. The year passed so quickly as if the clock had synchronized itself with the new version of Pentium processors.

The years 2006 is replete with memories of glory, vanity, victory, downfall, sorrow, bloodshed, political turmoil, and of course hope.

One of the biggest shock of the year was murder of suave charmer Pramod Mahajan, who fell to his own brother's bullets in a family feud.

For many, the year was a deathbed, hopelessness and a life with no purpose. Man made orchestra of terror and devastation wrought havoc on the lives of innocent people. Be it the deadly July Mumbai train bombings, Malegaon blasts, attack on the Sankat Mochan Temple in Varanasi and other sporadic violence which claimed many lives and maimed and paralysed others. To top it all, shear negligence of railway officials at Bhagalpur led to loss of more than 30 lives.

The agents of terror with many ‘synonyms’ – Naxals, freedom fighters, terrorists, Maoists, dons, private armies, etc etc tried to inflict maximum wound, suffering, bloodshed and fear.

But, we as a nation rose like phoenix after each tragedy and came together as one people to face the enemy united.

The numerous tragedies could not deter us from moving ahead on the path of progress and to reach the ladder of success. Despite these hurdles, at the end of the year, when we look back there are no feelings of regret and remorse but a feeling of contentment and satisfaction over our achievement.

We won’t look back; the perpetrators of these ghastly incidents are waiting to go to the gallows. Because we have created institutions which ensured that the guilty are brought to book.

And I hope, we have defeated terrorists with our resilience.
