Snaking
above, below and on the ground, one world-class train service-Metro -- has shaped
a new future for urban transportation in the national capital and mitigated the
travel woes of millions of Delhiites. Since its inauguration in December
2002, the Delhi Metro has become the capital's showpiece as it makes travelling
in this crowded, and at places chaotic, city of 15 million people and over four
million vehicles quicker and more comfortable than ever before. In December
2004, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh flagged off the sleek, futuristic trains on
their maiden journey underground. And the much awaited Dwarka-Barakhamba line
was supposed to be opened towards the end of this year, but due to some "technical"
reason, service on this stretch will begin from January 1, 2006. The rise
in passengers using the Metro is expected to rise from the present 2.7 lakh to
up to 6 lakh. High capacity buses have been another boon to people in Delhi.
The buses have helped in catering to more people and have reduced traffic on the
roads. |
