The
extradition of underworld don Abu Salem and his girlfriend Monica Bedi on November
11, made possible by the excellent co-operation from the Portuguese authorities,
has been a landmark event for Indian Intelligence. It's a testimony to the
excellent co-ordination among the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Indian
Government and the Indian embassy in Lisbon, Portugal. Despite all his proven
abilities to mislead and masquerade (Salem had undergone plastic surgery in a
South American country), the don failed to escape the gritty gaze of the law when
the CBI officers established his true identity through his fingerprints.
Yet, it remains to be seen whether justice will be done to the
innocent hundreds who fell victim to the dire display of the don's
brutality in the 1993 Bombay blasts (257 people were killed and
1,400 others were injured).
