Just when Indians thought the march towards a 'dream India' had
begun and corruption was a thing of the past, came the Volcker report.
Former chairman of American Reserve Paul Volcker, investigating
the controversial Oil-for-Food programme, had named 125 Indian companies
as beneficiaries and among them was former External Affairs Minister
Natwar Singh.
The business capital of India, Mumbai, took its worst brunt when
unprecedented rains brought the maya nagari to a standstill
claiming more than 1,000 lives.
Indians had to contend with three high profile rapes cases, showing
just how unsafe women are in India.
CBI's raids on politicians,
bureaucrats and government officials were hardly a face-saving exercise as the
world witnessed Indian 'transparency' in governance. India could barely
hide its blushes when Narayan Murthy (among world's top 50 CEO) was publicly embarrassed
by former PM Deve Gowda. Also embarrassing was an obscure Muslim outfit's
fatwa against Sania Mirza's dress on court. |
