When the media flashed images of Wipro's office in Bangalore under
10 feet of water, India's IT dream almost looked shattered. When
Mumbai was hit by unprecedented rains, Indians were shocked to see
its dream city neck deep in water.
What had happened to the dream that was to be India? How did we
blunder and flounder so badly?
People stranded in homes in waist-deep waters, carcases flowing
all over for days on end, people living without electricity and
water supply for several days... all this in the maya nagari
of India. Unbelievable!
And Mumbai was to be the Shanghai of India! What a shame. With
so much of Mumbai built on reclaimed land, how would water get drained?
Clearly, neither the politicians, nor the real estate lobby thought
of it before. And little did they care! As all of low-lying areas
of the city lay in 10-15 feet of water, people wondered how the
city of dreams could turn this bad?
If tsunami ravaged the Tamil Nadu coastline and ate into much of
Naggapattinam, the merciless North East monsoons created havoc in
Chennai and neighbouring areas.
India had momentarily, turned into a soggy hellhole.
