'India on the UNSC is a matter of time'

By HT Correspondent , Hindustan Times

Former governor of Florida Jeb Bush said on Saturday at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit that India's inclusion at the UN Security Council is only a matter of time, given the fact that the institution, and the world, are undergoing tremendous positive change. "I would also imagine that a Latin American country such as Brazil would be key in this change. It is therefore a matter of time before India and Brazil are part of the UN Security Council."

Bush, brother of US President George W Bush, steered clear of making any statements on the US-India nuclear deal, since, he said, "I am here in New Delhi as a private citizen. I do not represent the US government, or any public office in the US. It would be wrong for me to comment on anything related to government policy."

Bush spoke about how education and entrepreneurial capitalism will lead to greater cooperation between the US and India. "I am looking forward to the removal of trade barriers as well as enhanced shared aspirations in the field of education," he said. "There are more than 80,000 students of Indian origin at US universities, and I am looking forward to the day when we have double or even triple of that figure."

He added that in the 21st century, the development of knowledge-based infrastructure would be as important as physical infrastructure. "If there is one area where there has been no development since the 1950s, it has been education. If we use best practices and technology the same way as we use in other fields, every child will have the right to pursue his or her dream.
