HINDUSTAN TIMES MINT LUXURY CONFERENCE 2007 New Delhi , March 30, 2007 : The Hindustan Times Mint Luxury Conference 2007 inaugurated by Mr.Kamal Nath , Minister for Commerce and Industry , India and Ms.Christine Lagarde , Minister for Foreign Trade, France; saw a host of delegates from the international arena of luxury goods. Also present were Ms.Shobhana Bhartia , Vice-Chairperson and Editorial Director, HT Media Ltd. and Mr. Vir Sanghvi , Editorial Advisor, HT Media Ltd. 'The time has come to be in India ', declared Mr. Yves Carcelle , Chairman and CEO, Louis Vuitton Malletier, 'There is a long-standing relationship between India and Luxury. India seems to be the new frontier of luxury with some of the best clients in the world'. Speaking at the same session, Ms. Francoise Montenay , Chairman, Comite Colbert and president, Chanel SAS said, 'Luxury houses with their direct investments can help to be partners of Indian development'.The post-lunch session saw Dr. Ajay Dua , Secretary (IPP), Ministry of Commerce, Government of India talking about the boom in the country's luxury segment. 'Cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad have luxury malls coming up, now that foreign capital is being allowed in. The luxury market in India only began 3 years ago and is expected to grow between 20-25% a year'. Mr. Armando Branchini, Managing Director, Altagamma, said, 'Presence of international brands would help boost the economy rather than Indians going abroad to buy international luxury products'. Ms. Elisabeth Ponsolle des Portes, President & CEO, Comite Colbert reiterated the point. Mr. Christophe Caillaud , CEO, Jean Paul Gaultier commenting on the segment of accessories said, 'A lot of competition lies in the accessories market just as it does in the ready-to-wear segment. We are excited to launch in India as Jean Paul himself has been traveling here for many years to source embroidery, silks and cashmere'. Other speakers of the day were Mr. Patrick Bousquet-Chavanne , Group President, The Estee Lauder Companies Inc. and Mr. Philippe Leopold-Metzger , CEO, Piaget. The day concluded with a session by Mr. Michele Norsa , CEO, Salvatore Ferragamo who said, ' India has untapped potential and therefore is the ideal destination for our next global network of flagship stores'.
