Chandra sekhar Bhaskar Bhave, chairman of Securities Exchange Board of India, is a 1975-batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre. He was the executive director in charge of the secondary and later the primary markets between 1992 and 1996.
This was the most critical time in the economy as India, smarting under a securities scam, took the first tentative step towards setting up a comprehensive regulatory architecture for capital markets. He was instrumental in giving primacy to individual investors’ protection and simultaneously woo investor interest.
As the head of the National Securities Depository Limited, Bhave revolutionised the capital market by getting market players to accept the new system of dematerialised shares and debentures.
