Star-crossed
Astrological advice is to the effect that the confluence of the stars on the morning of August 15 is inauspicious. The decision of the British Parliament that the appointed day for transfer of power should be August 15 will be adhered to. At the same time due respect is being paid to astrological counsel, which predicted the failure of the Simla Conference — A.P.I. (HT, August 1, 1947)

Sikh Sense
Arjun Singh, who was charged with possessing a sword … was discharged. The accused said he was a Sikh… The court held that the word Sikh was not defined … (and) anybody who declared himself a Sikh was entitled to possess a sword. (HT, August 2, 1947)

  Cry Freedom
Cheers burst forth from all parts of the House as the President of the Constituent Assembly, Dr Rajendra Prasad, announced while adjourning the House that it would next meet at zero hour of August 14/15. As the clock strikes 12 the Constituent Assembly will start its proceedings taking over sovereign authority under the Indian Independence Act.

BEEB, BEEB
Some surprise has been expressed in political quarters at the B.B.C. going out of its way in calling Hyderabad as “the independent State of Hyderabad.
India has not recognised the State as such and Britain has agreed not to recognise any Indian State as a separate political entity.

BELOW THE BELT
The Government of India have ordered the Madras Government to stop the export of ‘lungi’ cloth to South Africa as part of reprisals against the South African ‘Ghetto’ Act, it is learnt.

WHAT’S THE NATIONAL DRESS?
Sir, — An average man wants to know what should be our National dress. I have inquired from several Pandits of eminence to tell me "what is or has been a Hindu dress", but none of them could give me any satisfactory reply. India urgently needs a National Dress like her National Flag.
I would request the leaders of the Union to set up a committee to decide what should be our National Dress.
Yours etc., C.P. Singh, Lucknow.
