Bollywood stars Hrithik Roshan, Madhuri Dixit
and Manisha Koirala joined several top designers in the "Say
no to Shahtoosh" campaign at the ongoing fashion extravaganza
in Mumbai.
The stars were among dozens of people who signed
the "Say no Shahtoosh" banner at the Lakme India Fashion
Week where 44 top designers are showcasing their talent.
"Wearing a shahtoosh is no longer fashionable. There are many
softer and warmer fabrics available today, which look even better.
You do not need to wipe out a species from the planet to look good,"
said designer Ritu Kumar who has come out with a new line in shawls
called "Alternatives to Toosh".
Shahtoosh shawls became a fashion statement
in India a decade ago with growing overseas markets in Britain, Italy,
France and the United States.
With a price tag upwards of 500,000 rupees, the shawl was once patronised
by royalty in India and is passed down generations as a family heirloom.
Kumar, known for her traditional Indian clothes and intricate embroidery,
showcased shawls made of pashmina wool as well as pashmina-silk mixes
as an alternative to shahtoosh.
