There's a whiff of serious fashion in the air at the Taj Palace, the venue of the India Fashion Week. Media, trade buyers and designers move around in a business-like manner, while conspicuous by their absence are the elite who come to fashion shows to see and be seen. All shows begin professionally on time and end without fuss. The first day was kick-started by Ranna Gill and Monisha Jaising. Both designers complement each other stylistically, concentrating on cut, style, silhouette and insisting on retaining the essence of feminity.
Ranna
Ranna's collection was elegant and inclined to be more international than Indian. She used a lot of denim and linens rather than the usual lame and expensive fabrics, keeping the work minimalistic. She used interesting piping and a play of colour as accent rather than embroideries. The designer says, "We worked backwards by selecting the fabrics and the look after keeping the price range in mind.'' Though quality wasn't compromised, the look did become more minimalised than Ranna's usual style. The silhouettes were modern and international, with just an Indian touch here and there.
Monisha Jaising
Monisha's collection had a very distinct Mumbai, and so very international, look. Superb tailoring and cuts and careful selection of fabrics made for a very elegant collection that had chic slinky dresses, capris, shirt-dresses, halter tops, knee-length skirts and suit-pants. Her embellishments were minimal, restricting themselves to touches of floral embroideries, kundan motifs and rhinestones. The designer used a lot of linen, cotton-based fabrics and some knits. The very Western look submerged into an Indo-Western one in the finale.
