Things started picking up on Day 2 of the IFW, with most of the stalls having been set up and the crowds for the shows increasing. The day began with a show by Poonam Bhagat, Kiran Uttamghosh (Calcutta) and Deepika Govind (Bangalore).

Poonam’s collection was good; it had a complete look. Very prêt, very fresh. Kiran’s collection was interesting too. Unfortunately, Deepika’s collection was very tacky. It had threads falling off the dresses and was finished badly. The designer had just two kinds of garments and presented all colours in them.

Abhishek and Nandita (Delhi) presented their collection next. Nandita did the womenswear while Abhishek designed for the men. Now, Nandita’s collection was fabulous; in fact, to die for. She had dramatized the whole thing and had spiders, insects, grasshoppers, bumblebees and beehives on girls’ hairstyles. The shoes and bags matched the outfits and were beautifully structured and finished. In sharp contrast, the menswear was boring, similar and casual. Everything looked alike.

Puja Nayyar (Delhi) and Rohit Gandhi/Rahul Khanna (Delhi) showed next. Puja’s clothes were good, but beyond a point the sameness again became boring. Rohit was good - simple, with lots of fun and leather.

Rocky S (Mumbai) attracted the likes of Hrithik Roshan and Suzanne, Aftab Shivdasani and Amisha Patel amongst the audience. This show was a lesson in how you can do so much more with even menswear. Models strutted around in swimming trunks, tight T-shirts and masks, or even just loose pyjamas with bare torsos.

Yes, the IFW really picked up tonight. Looking forward to tomorrow…
