Muzaffar and Meera Ali (Kotwara) at IFW

Ask Muzaffar Ali his philosophy of fashion and what would you expect but a very poetic, soulful response. "Having walked into the field from films and being based in Awadh, design became a character, moving in space and time, in varying nature of designed light, occasions and moods.

"Styling had to come from within. It created a mind, which became the face, the body and what was worn. We began to design minds of those who design clothes, those who made them, and those who wore them.

"What we designed concerned the human habitat and human expression through art, be it film, music, painting or poetry. Clothes therefore are part of a larger philosophy -- what appeals to you as beautiful and striking is a coming together of these elements and reflects the Master Designer."

Commenting on the state of the Indian fashion design industry vis-à-vis the West, Muzaffar says, "Indian fashion is at a crossroads. It has grown. The craftsmanship was always there and it has been saved by the demands of the burgeoning middle class and the rising nouveau riche. A horde of designers have come up to meet their demands. The Indian fashion industry is in a little better state than Indian films and architecture. Its global relevance for the westerner is still far from a satisfactory equation. Maybe this show will help break new grounds - we have yet to see."
