GET YOUR OWN STYLE, RIGHT HAIR
Akash Arora (HT City)

Who says there aren’t enough guinea pigs around? At the Lakme and Sunsilk hair and beauty salon during the Lakme India Fashion Week, we spotted hordes of guys and girls vying to get bizarre haircuts or makeovers done by the experts who happily experimented on their hair and face. One of them was designer Aparna Chandra who completely trusted the skills of Hollywood hairstylist Joseph Neeko Abriol and participated in his Sunsilk hair workshop titled International Trends In Hair Design. But Aparna was lucky and she walked away with a stunning hairdo.

“When a celeb comes to me, the first thing I do is study his or her face and body characteristics – hair texture, height, facial features – and then decide a look for him or her. The whole concept of putting a specific hot look on anybody and everybody is passé. Now haircuts are customised for each client,” says the hairstylist who styled Halle Berry’s famous short and unkempt look.

He found Aparna’s short hair extremely heavy. He first lightened them cutting her hair using slant scissor style. “When I keep the scissor slant, it does not cut the hair in one line. As a result of which it gives great texture to her hair and lightens them. This also prevents the hair from falling on one another and gives them space to mingle and gives a free-flowing look,” says Neeko.

“Some of my best haircuts have been accidental,” he adds. “Take for instance the hairdo I gave to Halle. Two of us, with some other friends, were watching a late night video at her place and stayed back. The next morning, she wakes up with this weird look. And I knew instantly, it’ll be a hit. I took her to the dressing room, trimmed her hair and gave a funky, unkempt look. This hairstyle went on to become a rage internationally,” he recalls.

But in Aparna’s case, it was no accident. She walked out with a sexy hairdo all planned and decided by Neeko, the great.
