THE FINAL ROUND GOES TO CHOREOGRAPHY
Akash Arora (HT City)

The Choreographer duo Asha Kochhar and Vidyun Singh who have been witness to a lot of fashion weeks abroad say that the choreography abroad is very simple, to the point and without much drama.

“That is particularly true for the ready-to-wear shows where the focus is trade. While haute couture fashion weeks have a lot of drama when it comes to ready-to-wear shows, designers and choreographers usually keep the ramp very minimal and that’s exactly what we doing in the ongoing India Fashion Week,” informs Vidyun Singh.

“We are not changing the backdrop for different designers as we did during the first year for that usually leads to delays in the shows,” says Asha Kochhar. “There aren’t any strobe lights either as the focus of the show is clothes and we are not looking at any drama on the ramp whatsoever,” she adds.

While four days have been dedicated for model fittings, there aren’t any rehearsals either this time round. “There are as many as five shows in a day. Where is the time for rehearsals? That’s why we have gotten over with fittings even before the start of fashion week and we are keeping the choreography more or less straight with single or at the most double entry where rehearsals aren’t really required,” explains Vidyun.

But are Indian models able to deal with the stress of doing five shows in a day and still not goof up on the ramp? “Well we have two groups of models who do alternate shows. So no model does two consecutive shows. That gives each model enough time to catch their breath and do the makeup for the next show. We have a team of very experienced models who are certainly able to overcome the stress. They managed it somehow last year as well,” explains Asha.

All the necessary instructions have been given to the models during the fitting session. “It is very essential for the models to understand the mood the designer wants them to project on the ramp,” says Vidyun. With such meticulous planning, there can’t be any goof ups.
