Sania’s slice of summit surprise

New Delhi, November 16

The summit surprised tennis star Sania Mirza with a belated birthday cake. The ace turned 19 on Tuesday. The celebrity session began with Sania and her mother, Naseema — with whom she shares her birthday — cutting a cake to resounding applause from the audience.

Natalie’s secret

Miss Universe Natalie Glebova came to the summit with her ‘sash’. The lissome Russia-born beauty looked every inch the global celebrity in her spaghetti top and blue denims. Natalie, however, refused a slice of the cake, leading many in the audience wondering about her hour-glass figure.

Friend indeed!

Natwar Singh is not short of friends. He has just landed an invitation to vacation in Mauritius — extended by Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. It is a tempting invitation. So, will he accept?

Natwar bytes

Guess who grabbed the spotlight after Sania left? Natwar. “Would he or wouldn't he” field queries on Volcker was the buzz. But when he spoke, officials were foxed. It was an anecdote: After Idi Amin’s foreign minister was sacked, the man had taken a week renaming the country (Uganda) 'Idi'. When Amin asked why, he’d said, in Cyprus, the people are called Cypriots. If Uganda was called Idi, we would be idiots!

Common thread

What bound Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq at the summit. Their fathers and grandfathers. Referring to the Indira Gandhi- Sheikh Abdullah accord — that Mehbooba described as a “so-and-so accord” — Omar said it signalled the peace process. “The grandsons of the two signatories are here today,” he said of his and Rahul Gandhi’s presence. During his recent Muzaffarabad trip, the Mirwaiz apparently walked his grandfather’s path — the same route he had taken to flee Kashmir in 1947.
