Television Commentator and Columnist

Mr. Karan Thapar is unarguably one of India's leading television commentator and interviewer. He is known for his trademark aggressive interviews and talk shows.

Born in 1955 in Srinagar, he studied at the Doon School and Stowe School. He graduated with an Economics, Social and Political Science Tripos from Cambridge University. Incidentally he was also the Union president of the University in 1977. He completed his Doctorate in International Relations from Oxford University.

Mr. Thapar made his mark in the field of Indian television with his program Eyewitness, a current affairs program that included interviews with politicians. Other popular programs include The Chat Show, In Focus with Karan, BBC's Face to Face. Some of his famous interviews include the one with Mr. Kapil Dev and with General Pervez Musharraf. He is perhaps the only Indian journalist to have 10 years experience in television outside India.

A prolific columnist, Mr. Karan Thapar writes for the Hindustan Times and Sunday Sentinel. He was the Leader Writer for The Times on the Indian subcontinent till 1991; a position he was appointed to in the 1980s. Mr. Thapar has received numerous awards and recognition in his career till date, but will continue to be known as the hard talking interviewer who brought drama to otherwise intrepid interviews.
