Mr. L.K. Advani
President, Bhartiya Janata Party

Mr. Lal Krishna Advani is the President of the Indian nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Leader of the Opposition in the 14th Lok Sabha. He was the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister in the Indian government (1998-2004). He is considered to be the most influential leader in his party. He was conferred the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for the year 1999.

A prominent figure in his party, Mr. Advani, 77, is attributed with charting the BJP's rise as a major political force, taking it from two parliamentary seats in 1984 to government within 15 years. Known for his formidable organising and analytical skills, he has a reputation as an efficient and honest administrator and is a skilled public figure.

He served as Member of the Rajya Sabha from 1970 to 1989. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1989 and 1991. He was elected President of Jana Sangh in 1973 and continued until 1977. He was then appointed Minister for Information & Broadcasting in the Janata Dal government. During his term, he freed the media from legislative and executive bounds and developed inbuilt safeguards for freedom. He abolished Press Censorship and repealed anti-press legislation.

Recently, Mr. Advani has announced that, he would step down as party president after its silver jubilee celebrations, to be held in Mumbai during December 2005.

Mr. Lal Krishna Advani was born on November 8, 1929 in Karachi. Having received early schooling in his hometown itself, he graduated with a degree in Law from Bombay University.
