Ms. Mehabooba Mufti
Chairperson, People’s Democratic Party
Ms. Mehabooba Mufti is the Chairperson of the Jammu & Kashmir
People’s Democratic party. She is the daughter of Mufti
Mohammad Sayeed, the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir.
She holds a law degree from Kashmir University.
She was one of the most popular members of the state assembly, when elected from Bijbehara on an Indian National Congress ticket in 1996. She proved her mettle as the leader of opposition in the assembly; the ruling government was that of National Conference at that time.
She resigned from her assembly seat and assumed the role of Vice President when her father formed the People’s Democratic Party in 1999. She played a key role in the formation of PDP and won the assembly seat again contesting from Pahalgam in South Kashmir in 2002 assembly elections. She was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004 and remains a prominent member of the ruling UPA coalition.
The Infinity Foundation has graced Ms. Mehabooba Mufti with
the Award for ‘Strengthening Indic Values in Public Life’.
It has been conferred on her for the outstanding contribution
in bringing some of the core values of Indic civilization into
active mainstream politics. She is the architect of the famous
“Healing Touch Policy” which aims to heal wounds
of the various communities in Kashmir, which have suffered from
terrorism. It is also meant to develop broad based consensus
among various political groups for a unified policy on Kashmir.
