Mr. Omar Abdullah
President, National Conference

Mr. Omar Abdullah belongs to one of the most illustrious families of Kashmir. He characterises modern Indian politics. He is the son of Dr. Farooq Abdullah, the former Chief Minister of the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir. He is known to be one of the most energetic and articulate among the new breed of young and emerging political figures. Mr. Abdullah has been educated in Mumbai and Scotland and holds a Masters degree in Business Administration. He has keen interest in sports and is widely travelled.

In 1998, Mr. Abdullah was elected to 12th Lok Sabha. In 1998-99, he was Member, Committee on Transport and Tourism and Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Tourism. In 1999, he was re-elected to 13th Lok Sabha. On October 13, 1999 he took oath as Union Minister of State, Commerce and Industry. On July 22, 2001, he was made Union Minister of State, External Affairs. He was the youngest minister at the age of 31 in the Indian cabinet.

While he was Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, the Commerce Ministry sanctioned funds to build a Software Technology Park in Srinagar, which would provide microwave connectivity to smaller technology parks elsewhere in the state.

Mr. Abdullah has been selected for the prestigious Eisenhower Foundation fellowship in the United States, beginning March 2006. He will understand conflict management and interact with various international forums to find a long-term, viable and sustainable solution to the Kashmir issue.

He currently serves as the President of National Conference, the opposition party in Kashmir. Mr. Abdullah’s moderate views and down-to-earth rationale are well known. He is married and has two sons. His wish is to see them grow up in a peaceful Kashmir, a privilege he enjoyed in his childhood.
