Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal
Chairman & Managing Director, Bharti Tele-Ventures

Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal is the Chairman and Managing Director of Bharti Tele-Ventures. A graduate from Punjab University, he completed the “Owner/ President Management Programme” from Harvard Business School in 1999.

Mr. Mittal started his career in 1976 by setting-up a unit to manufacture bicycle components. In 1982 he ventured into the portable generator industry, which gave him a chance to explore areas like marketing and advertising.

He is the Founder, past President and Chairman of various telecom industry associations such as Cellular Operators Association of India, Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association of India from 1990 to 1996 and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Telecom Committee. He is a member of the Steering Committee and Executive Committee of FICCI. He is the Co-Chairman of the Indo-US Joint Business Council.

Mr. Mittal’s interest in push button phones while on a trip to Taiwan, in 1982, got him to introduce the same in India. Bharti Telecom Limited (BTL) was incorporated and entered into a technical tie up with Siemens AG of Germany for manufacture of electronic push button phones. By the early 1990s, the company was manufacturing telecom gear such as fax machines, cordless phones and much more.

In 1995, Bharti Cellular Limited (BCL) was formed to offer cellular services under the brand name AirTel. Within a few years Bharti became the first telecom company to cross the 2-million mobile subscriber mark. In 2001, the company entered into a joint venture with Singapore Telecom International for a $650-million submarine cable project, the country’s first ever undersea cable link connecting Chennai, in India, and Singapore.

For his impact in the Indian Telecom Industry and other contributions, Mr. Mittal has been honoured with several awards. He was chosen as one of the top entrepreneurs in the world for the year 2000 and amongst 'Stars of Asia', by 'Business Week', he received IT Man of the Year Award 2002 from Dataquest and CEO of the Year, 2002 Award (World HRD Congress).
