Mr. Viren Bhagat
Jewellery Designer
The jewellery business of Mr. Viren Bhagat started its journey in Lathi, a tiny village on the western coast of India, four generations and almost a century ago. From its genesis, designing gold ornaments to meet the exacting requirements of local rulers, today its jewellery is expected to meet the sophisticated tastes of the global elite, which it certainly does. The creations reflect a strong artistic and visionary strand that runs through the family. Mr. Viren’s father was a professor of art and an accredited painter, and the designs and work of Mr. Viren and his two brothers, Mr. Bharat and Mr. Rajan, demonstrate the same artistic experimentation.
Not content with replicating traditional Indian designs, the designer’s early work combined contemporary western style with Indian influences. But it is the art deco experimentation of the early twentieth century, fused with traditional motifs and skills that have had a lasting impact on his design philosophy. The design inspiration encompasses the wide and varied field of Indian aesthetics – cultural symbols, textile motifs, and sculpture and temple friezes. The emphasis on floral forms reiterates the influence of Mughal decorative art, an endless source of visual stimulation for the celebrated designer. Yet the pieces are neither clichéd nor plagiaristic.
When all's said and done, Mr. Viren’s jewellery speaks of expertise knotted to creativity. It carries a discrete stamp of design that comes from great obsession and sheer commitment to vocation. |
