| Gautam Ghosh, a strident political activist
and a photojournalist used cinema as an effective instrument to express
himself wins this years Best Director Award. The director, who has
made several films on social issues, believes that cinema makes a
powerful and lasting statement. He forayed into the filmdom with Hungry
Autumn, a prize-winning documentary.
His first film was Mabhoomi, which depicted the uprising
of the workers against the Nizam of Hyderabad. He later made films
like Dakhal in Bengali, Antarjali Yatra and Padma
Nadir Majhi. Gautam Ghosh's Antarjali Yatra dealt with
the extremities of the caste system.
Gautam displayed a firm command of the medium and deep social insight
in his next film Paar. Gautam Ghosh's Paar was based on a
story of Samaresh Bose. His ninth feature film Dekha, which
was released in 2001, was also a smash hit. This was the first Bengali
film to have used Dolby stereophonic sound.
