If it was Sachin Tendulkar who gave the Aussies nightmares after their
tour of India in 1997-98, it was Harbhajan Singh who did the honours during
their 2001 tour. The Punjab off-spinner completely destroyed the Australian
batting order by scalping 32 wickets in the three-Test series, including
a hat trick at Kolkata - the first by an Indian in Test cricket. Harbhajan
Singh was responsible for India's series victory. The 32 wickets he grabbed
in the series made him a superstar.
An economy rate of just over 4.00 runs per over in one-day cricket is respectable enough and five for 43 against England in Bombay in February boosted his strike rate. With Kumble now back in the team the Indians have a pair of spinners
worthy of comparison with the golden era of Bedi, Chandrasekhar, Prasanna
and Venkat. |
