serving as Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International
Affairs at the Department of Transportation, Karan has previously
served as Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and
Security in the Bush administration.
Prior to that, he was Chief Counsel for the Department of
Commerce's Bureau of Export Administration.
In September 2005, President George W Bush announced his
intention to nominate Karan K Bhatia of Maryland to be Deputy
US Trade Representative with the rank of ambassador.
Before that, in September 2003, Karan was nominated by President
Bush as Assistant Secretary of Transportation for Aviation
and International Affairs and was confirmed by the Senate
shortly thereafter.
Before joining the Bush administration, Karan was a partner
in the Washington law firm of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering,
where he was a member of the firm's international and corporate
groups and the administrative partner for its international
aviation, defence and aerospace practice areas.
Strong on academics, Karan has a Bachelor's degree from Princeton
University and a Master's degree from the London School of
Economics. He got his law degree from Columbia Law School.
If Karan is confirmed by the full Senate, after being okayed
by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation,
he will become the highest ranking Indian American ever to
serve in the US government bureaucracy.
