On April 27, 1959 a "crime of passion" sent shockwaves rippling through Bombay. A Navy commander had murdered a ritzy romeo with a penchant for defence personnel's wives.

The agent provocateur was Prem Ahuja, a businessman and a philandering high society playboy who wore his heart on his sleeve and had almost whisked away Commander Kawas Nanavati's alluring English wife Sylvia from under his nose. When three bullets from the smoking gun barrel put an end to the fatal attraction.

Such an incident was unheard of in the higher echelons of the Bombay society and the "original crime of passion" and the trial thereafter immediately caught the imagination of the people in Bombay and nationwide.

Not just that. The case brought forth an upheavel in the judicial system of the country and was a landmark in India's legal history. From books to movies, the case spawned an interest unparalled till date.

Lonely hearts club
"Attention is aphrodisiac for a lonely lady & that was what Prem gave to win over Sylvia.

My mother seemed more critical of Sylvia than I was. My father never discussed this case with me. Honestly, I saw my mother's response as defence machanism. I suspected that in a similar situation my mother too would have been led astray.

Syed Modi, eight times national badminton champion was shot dead in Lucknow on July 28, 1988 by unidentified assailants as he came out of the K D Singh Babu stadium after a practice session.

On September 3, the CBI arrested Jan Morcha leader and former UP Transport Minister, Dr. Sanjay Singh on the charge of conspiring to murder Syed Modi. Dr. Sanjay Singh was arrested under Section 302 IPC.

The CBI took over the case from the police two days after the murder and started working on a love-triangle theory involving Syed Modi's wife; Ameeta Modi, a former Maharashtra badminton player and Dr. Sanjay Singh.

Ten days later, the CBI claimed to have laid its hand onsome clenching evidence and arrested five persons. They were Akhilesh Singh, Amar Bahadur Singh, Bhagwati Singhy, Jitendra Singh, and Balai Singh.

While Akhilesh is alleged to have hired the killers, Amar Bahadur Singh, Bhagwati Singhy and Jitendra Singh were charged with driving the getaway vehicle.

Balai Singh was picked up from Rae Bareily on the charge of being the fourth occupant of the car.

The CBI raided the residences of Dr. Singh and Mrs. Ameeta Modi. A day after the raid on Ameeta's house, the CBI started circulating extracts from a personal diary allegedly seized from her.

The alleged extracts detailed the meetings between Mrs Modi and Dr. Singh and pointed to a 'close relationship' between them.

Dr. Singh was named the main conspirator in the case.

Two days later, Ameeta was arrested on the charge of conspiring to murder her husband along with Dr. Singh.

Mrs. Modi was however released on bail on August 26.

Later on September 21, the Lucknow district and sessions court ordered that Dr Sanjay Singh be released on bail on a personal bond of Rs 10,000.

What conspired next is history. Sanjay Singh marriedAmita Modi few months later.

Sanjay Singh is a former BJP Rajya Sabha member and Amita, a Lok Sabha member from Amethi.
