At least 18 people were killed and 41 injured when a Manmad-bound express train rammed into a stationary goods train in Maharashtra in second rail accident in the region in a fortnight and Railways blamed it on "human failure".

The accident occurred around 1.30 am at Ghatnandur station in Beed district, 300 kms from here, and preliminary reports indicated that Secunderabad-Manmad Express' driver applied emergency brakes to avoid collision with the rear of the goods train on the same track and as a result three of its coaches got derailed.

Railway Minister Nitish Kumar admitted that the mishap was because of "human failure" and said strict action will be taken.  more »

  Compensation Rules For Accident Victims
In case of a train accident, the victims are entitled to compensation as per the gravity of the injury. In case of death, victim's family can claim Rs 4 lakh from Railway Claims Tribunal.

Apart from victims of rail accidents, this compensation is also offered to victims of dacoities, shoot-outs, murder, sabotage and bomb blasts in trains and on railway premises.
