Felines of the Fifties

Born on June 4, 1936, Nutan
was the eldest child of the famous actor Shobhana Samarth. Dismissed
as skinny and ugly at first, Nutan went on to bag the covetedMiss India title.

Although she was first signed for
a film starring Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor, Nutan made her debut with Hamari Beti (1950) which was directed by her mother.

After a short stint at a Swiss
finishing school - Le Chatelaine - Nutan gained a major breakthrough with her performance as a juvenile delinquent in Seema (1955).

In 1959 she got married and
eased out of films when her son, Mohnish Bahl was born. But the spotlight shone once again after her award winning Bandini (1963), a portrayal touted as one of the
finest in Indian cinema.

After over 40 years in the profession, Nutan passed away in February 1991. She had won 6 Filmfare Awards - the most any female actor has won till date.
