Possibly one of the greatest actors
ever, Smita Patil got critical acclaim for her one of earliest movie -
Manthan in the story of a woman who
leads a Harijan revolt.
A Marathi television newsreader,
Smita was noticed by Shyam Benegal for
her strong features and dusky complexion. They might have been a hinderance
to an otherwise 'traditional' commercial film career, but perhaps were
an asset to further her 'parallel cinema' career. She did experiment with
the pancaked look for movies like Namak Halal, but looked
grossly out of place.
Brilliant acting in strong roles like an outspoken tribal
in Bhavani Bhavai and the troubled actor Hansa Wadkar in Bhumika
among many other roles further
showcased her exceptional
acting abilities.

She was deeply committed to the cause of advancing women's issues
and usually did female-oriented films which explored women's role
in Indian society.
