Highlights: The perils of attempting Veerappan's sketch are
many
Even for this reporter who has been studying the poacher
for many years, has been a witness to his many treacheries and has
touched the fear he puts in people who have dared to cross his path.
However, an element of authenticity can be lent
to such a sketch, if an expert on criminals, deviants and psychopaths
was to make it.
To that end, Dr BN Chattoraj, a professor at the
National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Sciences, was given
a disjointed set of facts on Veerappan for comments. From his understanding,
the following inferences are drawn:
- The socio-economic and geographic situation has
influenced the making of this criminal, which explains his drift
towards crimes such as poaching and sandalwood smuggling, and
his aversion to the men in khaki.
- He is a psychopath, and like all psychopaths,
he wants to learn what others think of his exploits.
- His barbarity is a sign of his weakness; it
is an expression of fear that gang members might construe killing
alone as a sign of meekness.
- To conclude, the overall picture of the Veerappan
is that of a weak man who, due to his escapist tendencies, foists
upon himself an image of a jungle-smart and a daring Hun.
Editor's Note: It is clear from Chattoraj's
inference that the hostage H Nagappa's (see photo inset) life is
in danger. "Veerappan is a weak man, who, in order to appear
strong, will kill
" The mistake is in steeling forces
against him when there is a hostage situation. The best time to
attack him is when he is himself lying low.
