THE STRIKING medicos here have demanded that the four-member committee set up by the PM to resolve the reservation imbroglio should be abolished immediately.
While speaking to Hindustan Times, a medico said, “The government has deliberately constituted a pro-reservation committee comprising Arjun Singh, P Chidambaram and Pranab Mukherjee. Incidentally, all have advocated reservation to OBCs in higher studies.”
Another medico corroborated the stand and said, “This is a deceptive ploy by the government. Therefore, we demand constitution of a new committee that has an non-biased approach to the issue.”
Meanwhile, work at all the six hospitals under GSVM Medical College came to a grinding halt amid anti-reservation strike by the medicos and seniors’ silent support to the stir. Notably, only six new patients were admitted at the LLR Hospital on humanitarian grounds on Friday.
Majority of the GSVM Medical College professors, including several department heads, have tacitly supported the anti-reservation strike that entered the second day on Friday. The professors said, “Striking medicos need not worry about any action from the faculty as the anti-reservation strike is a national issue.” All Out Patient Departments remained closed and only extremely critical patients were admitted to the emergency ward of the LLR Hospital.
Meanwhile, some medicos who attended a meeting at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), in Lucknow on Friday, were assured support for the anti-quota stir. The medicos have also appealed to all the political parties to clear their stand on reservation. They have also asked the public to extend support to their cause. Following support from IIT-K and HBTI, the medicos have now begun their campaign at private professional colleges and urged them to protest against the reservation move.
A number of professors questioned the need for the proposed quota hike at the post-graduate level. They reasoned that the candidates had already enjoyed the privilege of reservation at the MBBS entrance level. Some faculty members said that there was no option left other than to halt services since the government was immune to medicos’ demands.
