'Crops worth Rs 4.14 cr damaged in Malda district'

Standing crops on 2600 hectares valued at Rs 4.14 crore have been damaged this year in West Bengal's Malda district due to floods and breaches in river embankments, a senior district official said on Thursday.

The Chief Agriculture Officer of the district Giasuddin Ahmed said that the damaged crops included paddy, maize, pulses and jute.

Nine mouzas of blocks one and two of Harischandrapur Sub-division of Malda district were the worst affected areas, Ahmed said adding that 100 hectares had been eroded by the rivers Fulohar and Ganga. Of these 100 hectares, most of the land was used for agriculture purpose.

The district agriculture department had arranged for distribution of pulse -seed kit at free of cost among the affected farmers, Ahmed added.
