Calling for declaring water as a national property, the Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray has said his party would make all efforts to ensure greater water conservation in view of the predicted water scarcity in future.

The growing demand for water by the day and increased levels of pollution only go to prove that the scarcity of water could turn out to be a big issue, Uddhav said while speaking at a symposium on "Water policy for 21st century" here yesterday.

"If immediate steps on the issue were not taken we fear there may be a war on the water issue", he said. The Sena leader said if the issue of large-scale water pollution was left unattended, a time would come when people would have to face severe hardships.

Speaking on the occasion, former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu called for interlinking rivers to accelerate water transport. Such a measure would help in boosting industrial growth and creating more employment opportunities, he said. Prabhu also emphasised the need for maximum efforts in water conservation through mass education and prevention of wastage of water.
