Sri Lanka's Dev Whatmore is to start coaching Bangladesh's national cricket team from May, a Bangladesh Cricket Board official said here Sunday.

"Dev Whatmore will take over as our team's new coach from May after his contract with Sri Lanka expires," said the official, who did not want to be identified.

Whatmore would have an annual purse of 100,000 dollar plus other benefits, he said.

If his appointment is confirmed, Whatmore will be the national team's seventh coach since 1990. Bangladesh has most recently been coached by Pakistan's Mohsin Khan and Ali Zia.

Whatmore coached the Sri Lankans in the last two World Cup. Bangladesh's team is facing an inquiry into their dismal performance in the last World Cup in South Africa.
