NOTED SAINT Om Ma Ravi Baba, ‘Mauni Baba’ (76) left for his heavenly abode at Parvatipur in Durgapur (West Bengal) at 3 pm on Tuesday. His body was brought to Varanasi on Tuesday night and later immersed in the holy Ganga on Wednesday morning.

‘Mauni Baba’ was the chief priest of Om Ma Ravi HariharVishwanath Ashram, situated at Assi Ghat on the bank of Ganga.

A large number of followers thronged the ashram since Tuesday night to pay tributes to the departed saint, who had kept mum (Maun Vrat) for more than 36 years.

It may be mentioned that Mauni Baba, disciple of Harihar Baba and Mata Anand Mai, was born in West Bengal in 1929. He left his house at the age of 12 and came to Kashi. After some time, he went to Mount Kailash (at present in China) for ‘tapasya’ and later got enlightenment at the Ashram of Mata Anand Mai in Almora.

Later, Harihar Baba and Vishwanath Baba (the predecessors of Mauni Baba) called him to take charge of the Ashram in Varanasi in late 60s. After that, he kept a Maun Vrat and resided in a room for more than 36 years. He never came out of the room during that period. But after 36 years, he started speaking and blessing his followers.

Among other followers who participated in the last rites of Mauni Baba, were Prof Ram Bali Singh, Dr SD Singh, Dr Yashwant Singh, Dr Dheeraj Yadav, Nagendra Singh, Sanjay Shukla, Shailendra Ojha, Rajesh Chaturvedi.
