Singer Sonu Nigam has been travelling like a nomad for concerts, with just his books and guitar for company. However, that’s not what’s really keeping him busy these days. Rather it’s his new album.
“That will be launched in March,” says an excited Sonu. “This is new for me. I am so used to doing chalta hai wala gaana. For the first time, I am doing something that is a gift to myself as a singer,” quips Sonu, whose last album was Chanda Ki Doli.
The new album, with music by Jitu Pandit and lyrics by Ajay Jhingran, will have eight tracks — all solos (he has five songs left to sing) — but Sonu informs that he will rope in a big name for one of the tracks. However, the singer, who was in Kolkata on Tuesday, will not name the artist now.
Saregama, the producers of the album, are eager to release the album soon, says the singer. “Have you ever heard of such a thing before?” he asks.
“For me, singing is everything. I have been training for the last eight-nine months for the album. It started off as a classical album, but it’s got a blend of many other genres,” says Sonu.
He adds that the album has a different kind of arrangement. “From a singer’s point of view, it is satisfying to see that your hard work is paying off with so much of positivity around,” he says.
The singer had even performed in Kolkata during Christmas and the event was a huge success. “It was a three-hour-forty-minute show and, at one point of time, the audience and I both were crying,” says Sonu.
On the playback front, Sonu is not really quitting. Films are also in the pipeline for the singer who flirted with acting in duds such as Love In Nepal, Jaani Dushman and Kaash Aap Hamare Hote.
“I have some offers in hand now,” says Sonu, who says he hasn’t been able to decide because of his hectic schedule.
